Our first trip together was to the stunning islands of Maldives back in 2010, where we were introduced to the colourful, fascinating and mysterious underwater realm through our resort’s basic try dive program for beginners. From the day we finished our PADI Open water Certification, scuba diving in Maldives had always been on our bucket list.
During our first visit to Maldives we had stayed at Paradise Island, a beautiful & luxurious island resort. This time we wanted a budget location with good diving opportunities as this was a dive trip and all we wanted to do was EAT, SLEEP, DIVE – REPEAT, and headed to Maafushi, one of the inhabited islands of South Male’ Atoll, located 27 km away from the capital city of Male’.
Maldives underwater topology constitutes of thilas (pinnacles), outer reefs, reef passes or channels (where the ocean and the lagoon meet) with medium to strong currents. The different dive sites in Maldives can be categorized in to 4 groups North Male, South Male, Ari Atoll and Adu Atoll. We chose South Male for our dive trip since it offers some of the best diving sites in Maldives which are regularly explored by dive safari boats and also offers a taste and feel of local life in Maafushi island with plenty of options for budget accommodation.
There are 3 dive centers in Maafushi. We decided to go with Maldives Passion dive school after reading the reviews on Tripadvisor. They were also very prompt and patient in responding to all our emails and planned our dives based on our specific requirements.
Maldives passion dive school is based on Maafushi island in South Male’ atoll and they dive some of the most stunning dive sites around the island, all within 15 to 40 minutes reach by dhoni (local dive boat) which can accommodate around 20 divers. The dive center is managed by Marc Pomel and Adham Rafeeu, both highly experienced & professional divers with a team of extremely professional & fun instructors and dive masters. They offer courses starting from bubble maker (for kids aged 8 years and above), discover scuba diving all the way up to Dive Master.
The day before we started diving we chose our gear and were assigned box numbers, now all we had to do was remember our box numbers. These boxes with our equipment would be on the boat every day. After the dive the crew would rinse equipment and put it back in the same box. The dive equipment is very well maintained. The crew sets up all the equipment during the dives and all you have to is relax and enjoy the dives and have fun. After the dives they record time and depth of all divers, and the dives can be logged later-no struggling with log books getting wet on the boat.
Diver safety is given top priority at Maldives Passions. The dive briefings are elaborate and before dives dive masters check the currents to finalize the dive plan. Dive groups are small and the dive masters are experienced and attentive to individual diver requirement. They also take personalized interest in assessing a student’s weakness and then recommend corrective actions during the dive briefs.
This is one of the best dive centers that we have dived with. Maldives Passions is extremely professional, very well organized & absolutely fun to dive with. Above all this, what really matters – they are very good people. The best part about Maldives Passions is, we really don’t have anything negative to say, try as hard as we may!!!
Thank you Marc, Adham, Renee, Nihaal, Mohammed and the complete crew at Maldives Passions for all the super fun dives at Maafushi.
